Rabbits are adorable pets, but they aren’t the most popular pets out there. Compared to their pet counterparts, it’s safe to say that rabbits are quite rare in a household. For that very reason, it’s also no shocker that there is a lot about them that people are in the dark about. Behavior and habit aside, there is one thing you must know about your pet bunny and that is how to tell if they are sick and how to treat them.
Know their go-to ‘sick signs’:
There are a few common behavior changes a bunny goes through when they are feeling low, so to be able to tell whether they are sick, here are a few things to be on the look-out for.
Tooth grinding: If your bunny has been grinding his/her teeth louder than usual chances are they are experiencing some kind of pain.
Ear temperature: Rabbits regulate their body temperature through their ears. So depending on their very cold or hot ears you can tell if they may have a fever or sudden drop in body heat. In either case, it’s safe to visit the vet.
Drooling or wet chins: This could be a sign of teeth problems which if left untreated can lead to further infections. An additional symptom that may compliment this is a sudden loss of appetite.
The first thing you should always consider is taking your pet rabbit to see the vet when they feel sick. But if the symptoms are mild here are some things you can do to help them.
Herbs for health: Some herbs are known to be a healthy addition to your rabbit’s meal. Echinacea is a medicinal herb that helps boost their immunity and also holds antibacterial and antiviral properties for better health.
Fighting the fever: In a worst-case scenario, your pet rabbit starts to burn up with fever in the night, or for some reason you can’t take them to the vet immediately, what do you do? In this case, the best you can do till you reach the vet is to swab their ears with alcohol or a wet towel wrapped around ice cubes. You could even dip your finger in cold water and gently stroke their ears to keep them comforted.
Relieving gas pains: a gentle belly massage can do wonders for relieving the pressure of the gas. If their body temperature drops below 101-degree Fahrenheit keep them warm under covers and don’t forget to make sure they stay hydrated.
